Grants to Alberta IHEs, municipalities, industry organizations, agri-processors, research associations, and indigenous groups to improve early detection of diseases that pose threats to animal health, food safety, and plant health. Interested applicants should contact staff prior to submitting a proposal. Funding is intended to support monitoring programs that protect against existing and emerging livestock diseases, crop pests, bee pests, foodborne hazards, and other risks affecting plant, animal, and public health.

The following activities may be included in an Application under this Program:

  1. Development/enhancement and implementation of innovative, user friendly, and adaptable methods to support Surveillance programs in food safety, AMR/AMU, livestock disease, Crop Pests, or Bee Pests in Alberta;
  2. Collection, analysis, interpretation of data, generation of reports, and communication with stakeholders/the agriculture industry in Alberta for Surveillance;
  3. Design, development and implementation of Surveillance tools for Forecasting, monitoring, and communication;
  4. Surveillance that assists the Alberta agriculture industry to establish and/or maintain freedom of livestock disease, Crop Pest and/or Bee Pest status in Alberta; and
  5. Surveillance training of Applicants, and Applicants’communication of knowledge gained to the Alberta agriculture industry and/or the public.

Applicants are encouraged to develop projects in which the Applicant communicates their findings to the Alberta agriculture industry.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The Program provides grants on a cost-shared basis to cover Eligible Expenses for approved Projects up to a maximum of $750,000 per Project.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The following entities are eligible to apply under this Program:

a) Industry Organizations;
b) Municipalities;
c) Agri-Processors;
d) Post-Secondary Institutions;
e) Applied Research Associations;
f) Fee For Service Providers;
g) Indian Bands; and
h) Metis Settlements.

The following entities are not eligible under this Program:
a) Government agencies;
b) Primary Agriculture Producers;
c) Research stations; and
d) Any other entity deemed ineligible by the Minister

Individual producers are not eligible under this program.

Applications must be received by AF or postmarked on or before the deadline date.

Applications will be divided into the three streams based on the areas of focus the Applicant is applying under (Plant Health, Animal Health, or food Safety).

Eligible Expenses shall be cost-shared at 50% grant and 50% Applicant.
