Grants of up to $5,000 to Alberta nonprofit arts organizations in Calgary and surrounding areas for new, small-scale experiments and tests to address a challenge facing the organization. Applicants must contact program staff to obtain access to the application. Funding is intended to carry the potential for transformational impact and foster a culture of research and development.

The Rozsa Foundation recognizes that in the current economic context, arts organizations are attempting to realize their goals by experimenting with new approaches to producing work, resourcing that work, and sharing it with audiences. In support of nurturing a culture of research and development in the not-for-profit arts community in Alberta, the Rozsa Foundation is proud to offer Experimentation Grants, supporting organizations as they begin to explore new business strategies, testing hypotheses that carry the potential for transformational impact.

Rozsa Foundation Experimentation Grants are designed to provide seed funding for a small-scale new test or experiment, supporting high-learning processes that address a clearly identified challenge facing the organization. These experiments should represent a fundamental shift in the way the organization has been working previously, testing a clearly-articulated hypothesis which, if proven to be correct, could have significant impact moving forward.

Rozsa Foundation Experimentation Grants are designed to support the initial stages of the experiment, promoting a low-risk environment in which to undertake new approaches to work in a manner that is safe-fail in nature, not fail-safe. It is possible for multiple organizations to apply in partnership with one another, so long as clear rationale of the benefit behind a shared experiment is provided.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The following requirements apply to all Rozsa Foundation granting streams:

- You must be a charity with a valid CRA charitable business number (9 digits, 2 letters, 4 digits).
- You must be an arts-focused organization (or be applying for support in engaging the arts to further your mission).
- The focus of the investment is in Calgary and the surrounding area (including Rocky View County, MD Foothills, Banff, Canmore, Drumheller, and Rosebud) as well as to provincial organizations whose initiatives will directly benefit the Calgary arts community. Action Learning Projects are eligible, regardless of where in Alberta the organization is based.
- Organizations located outside of these areas may still be eligible but should contact the Foundation prior to beginning the application.
- Preference may be given to proposals that can use a Rozsa Foundation grant to leverage additional funding or other resources, as reflected in the project budget as well as those that are geared toward equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives and those that promote inter-organizational collaboration.

Please Note:

The Foundation does not fund administrative salaries and normal administrative costs, deficit financing, and debt repayment or capital campaigns. It will not fund your normal programming activities, but new programs or significant expansions are eligible if they can advance the organization in a meaningful way. It does not provide operating or undesignated funding, nor do they fund retroactively. If you are incurring costs before the decision meeting (these occur within one month after the deadline), the expenses may be ineligible.
