Grants to Ontario nonprofit organizations, artist collectives, and individual artists for innovative arts programs in the Waterloo Region. Applicants must submit an initial application prior to submitting a full application. Funding is intended to support projects in all arts disciplines, including performing arts (theatre, music, dance), visual arts, film/video/media, literature and interdisciplinary and community arts.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The Arts Fund has not set any maximum or minimum limits on its grants and may fund either a partial or full amount of the request. Grant amounts have ranged between $350 and $21,000, but most fall between $5,000 and $10,000.

Term of Contract:

Projects must occur within 12 months of receiving a grant.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Individuals, collectives and not-for-profit organizations practicing in any arts discipline and who are in good standing with the Arts Fund with no open or outstanding projects or reports may apply to the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund.

Applications are accepted from:

Individual artists:
- 18 years of age or older
- Legally entitled to be or remain in Canada
- In good standing with the Waterloo Region Arts Fund with no open or outstanding projects or reports

Unincorporated not-for-profit organizations or collectives:
- The majority of members of the ensemble, collective, or collaboration must meet
the individual eligibility criteria

Incorporated not-for-profit organizations that:
- Are registered as a not-for-profit corporation Federally or Provincially and are in
good standing for at least one year prior to the deadline
- Governed by a volunteer board
- Have the majority of its members living or working in the Region of Waterloo
- Operate at arm’s length from municipalities, commercial enterprises or educational institutions
- Demonstrate commitment to fiscal responsibility

Pre-proposal Conference:

The Arts Fund Board of Directors hosts an informal drop-in Open House for grant applicants in advance of the Spring and Fall rounds. Board members are available to share general information about the fund, its mandate and welcome feedback from applicants.

Open House Drop-In:
- Spring: Tuesday, February 5, 2019 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.
- Fall: Tuesday, August 13, 2019 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Pre-Application Information:

The Region of Waterloo Arts Fund evaluates applications twice each year in Spring and Fall rounds. At each stage, decision notification letters will be mailed to both successful and unsuccessful applicants.

Spring Deadlines (for projects July 1 – December 31)
- Stage 1 applications due: Friday, March 1, 2019 by 4:00 p.m.
- Letters mailed to all Stage 1 applicants: by Friday, April 12, 2019
- Stage 2 detailed applications due: Friday, May 10, 2019 by 4:00 p.m.
- Final adjudication letters mailed: by Friday, June 21, 2019

Fall Deadlines (for projects January 1 – June 30)
- Stage 1 applications due: Friday, September 6, 2019 by 4:00 p.m.
- Letters mailed to all Stage 1 applicants: by Friday, October 18, 2019
- Stage 2 detailed applications due: Friday, November 15, 2019 by 4:00 p.m.
- Final adjudication letters mailed: by Friday, December 20, 2019

The Arts Fund application process consists of two stages:
- Stage 1: The Basics. All applicants are invited to submit information as outlined on the application form.
- Stage 2: Only those applicants from Stage 1 who are shortlisted are invited to complete and submit the more detailed Stage 2 application form.

The Arts Fund does not fund projects retroactively. Grants may not be applied to activity started ahead of the application deadline and not before the granting decision date (notification of Spring round: end of June; Fall round: end of December).

When to apply:
- If the project will take place between January 1 and June 30, apply for the Fall round of the preceding year (September deadline).
- If the project will take place between July 1 and December 31, apply for the Spring round of the current year (March deadline).
